Manchmal dauert es halt ein bisschen mit dem Wissenstransfer. Die New York Times berichtet nun auch in den USA offen darüber, was die restliche Welt schon seit Jahren zuerst nur befürchtet und dann allabendlich auch im Fernsehen und in unzähligen Expertengesprächen wahrgenommen hat: Die US-Invasion des Iraks hat die Terrorgefahr vergrößert!

Spy Agencies Say Iraq War Worsens Terror Threat

WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 — A stark assessment of terrorism trends by American intelligence agencies has found that the American invasion and occupation of Iraq has helped spawn a new generation of Islamic radicalism and that the overall terrorist threat has grown since the Sept. 11 attacks.

The classified National Intelligence Estimate attributes a more direct role to the Iraq war in fueling radicalism than that presented either in recent White House documents or in a report released Wednesday by the House Intelligence Committee, according to several officials in Washington involved in preparing the assessment or who have read the final document.

The intelligence estimate, completed in April, is the first formal appraisal of global terrorism by United States intelligence agencies since the Iraq war began, and represents a consensus view of the 16 disparate spy services inside government. Titled “Trends in Global Terrorism: Implications for the United States,’’ it asserts that Islamic radicalism, rather than being in retreat, has metastasized and spread across the globe.

An opening section of the report, “Indicators of the Spread of the Global Jihadist Movement,” cites the Iraq war as a reason for the diffusion of jihad ideology.

The report “says that the Iraq war has made the overall terrorism problem worse,” said one American intelligence official. [...]

Nun, ganz dezent soll hier verwiesen werden, dass auch der kleinere britische Koalitionspartner letztes Jahr deutlich auf dieses Faktum darauf hingewiesen wurde ("Terror 'is the price we paid for going to war'). Helfen und ändern wird's wohl weiterhin nichts. Ein Problem: Fundiertes Wissen bedeutet noch lange nicht, dass Politiker dieses auch wahrhaben wollen. Da sind die Antworten von Dr. Emile A. Dumm nur, dass der Herr Dr. erst nach seiner Pensionierung öffentlich seine Positionen vertritt und so vor allem einen Einblick erlaubt, wie die CIA-Experten während der letzten Jahre wohl an ihren Volksvertretern verzweifelt sind.

Man ist ja als Europäer von den Amis so einiges gewohnt - z. B. geheime CIA-Gulags, in denen Terror-Verdächtige mal eben so von der Bildfläche verschwinden und dort mittels "alternativer Prozeduren" wie dem sog. "waterboarding" effizient gefoltert verhört werden. Das wussten die Europäer zwar schon seit Jahren und haben auch ganz offiziell und dezent immer einmal wieder darauf hingewiesen. Gekümmert hat es bekanntlich die Bush-Administration wenig.

Jetzt kommt ein neues, äußerst befremdliches Detail des unseligen Irak-Kriegs ans Licht. Der "Guardian" berichtet in "Book says CIA tried to provoke Saddam to war" über ein neues Buch, in dem Details über eine im Februar 2002 von Bush genehmigte und für Anfang 2003 geplante, aber dann doch nicht in die Tat umgesetzte Kriegsprovokation der US-Regierung enthüllt werden. Unter dem Codenamen "Anabasis" sollten von der CIA trainierte und eingeschmuggelte Exil-Iraker einen irakischen Militärflugplatz - keinen Radiosender - besetzen und eine "Revolte" gegen Saddam Hussein ausrufen. Die CIA rechnete damit, dass der irakische Diktator seinerseits zurückschlagen würde und dabei die Überflugszonen verletzten würde; der ideale Vorwand für eine militärische Invasion:

"The idea was to create an incident in which Saddam lashes out," John Maguire, a CIA agent who ran the operation told the authors, adding that if the plan worked "you'd have a premise for war: we've been invited in".

Letzlich entschied sich General Tommy Franks, der die tatsächliche Invasion im März 2003 befehligte, dagegen. Trainiert wurde übrigens angeblich "at an energy department nuclear test site, 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas". NTS oder Area 51?

Bush and Saddam Should Both Stand Trial, Says Nuremberg Prosecutor

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 25 (OneWorld) - A chief prosecutor of Nazi war crimes at Nuremberg has said George W. Bush should be tried for war crimes along with Saddam Hussein. Benjamin Ferencz, who secured convictions for 22 Nazi officers for their work in orchestrating the death squads that killed more than 1 million people, told OneWorld both Bush and Saddam should be tried for starting "aggressive" wars--Saddam for his 1990 attack on Kuwait and Bush for his 2003 invasion of Iraq.

"Nuremberg declared that aggressive war is the supreme international crime," the 87-year-old Ferencz told OneWorld from his home in New York. He said the United Nations charter, which was written after the carnage of World War II, contains a provision that no nation can use armed force without the permission of the UN Security Council.
